Shameful chapters of history, such as the African slave trade, the stolen generation, the massacre and displacement of Native Americans, the oppression of women, and forced child labor, were the products of a dangerous belief that those with power have the right to abuse those without it: that might somehow does make right. Whether for profit, convenience, or just plain amusement, this supremacist attitude caused people as a society to tolerate, perpetuate, and indignantly defend outrageously cruel acts". Welcome.......... Please note this site contains graphic images. We decided to include these graphic images as these are not unusual instances of cruelty and abuse. Billions of non human animals each year are subjected to this unbearable suffering, most of it with the knowledge of Governments everywhere. It may change your life and the lives of our non human animal friends. Please never underestimate the power of your voice. It is only when we speak out against these injustices and cruelty, that things will change. This is the way of peace. Please see how you can help. Thank you to all for everything you do for our non human animal friends. ..........."What do they know - all these scholars, all these philosophers, all the leaders of the world? They have convinced themselves that man, the worst transgressor of all the species, is the crown of creation. In relation to them, all people are Nazis; for the animals it is an eternal Treblinka."........Isaac Bashevis Singer, 1978 Nobel Prize Winner

Dear Friends,

Buddhists for Animal Rights [BAR] is a totally self funded independent Australian animal rights organisation that was established in mid 2005. Our other groups name is QGAR [Queensland Group for Animal Rights], so you will find many references to QGAR on this site.

Our main goal is to assist in the abolition of animal use in medical research, product testing, circuses, rodeos and other forms of entertainment. We are uncompromisingly opposed to the so-called sport of hunting and the wearing of animal skin, mainly fur, but also including leather, wool, down, etc. Plus, BAR supports the eventual phasing-out of animals for food consumption. Moreover, BAR is an unwavering supporter of human rights, and we are seeking an end to discrimination of all kinds. With your help, through non-violent action, we can end the unnecessary bloodshed, malicious treatment and injustices that all sentient beings endure.
[ thanks to ADAPTT for description]

We are currently involved in a variety of campaigns to address legal and institutional issues. We try to work constructively
with various Parliamentary and Departmental offices wherever possible with our informal group. We
also participate in many international and domestic animal rights campaigns and belong to many online animal rights action groups
.

Buddhists for Animal Rights is just another small cog in the wheel of an ever -growing international movement which believes that non human animals have a right to exist in this world without fear of death, imprisonment, torture or exploitation. We do not believe in the exploitation of sentient beings, human and non human, or the exploitation of the environment for profit. We believe all beings are interconnected, we are all equal, and hence we should all act accordingly to protect all beings from suffering and protect the environment in a non violent way.  Injustice to one being effects us all and makes us all the poorer for it.

"Ask the experimenters why they experiment on animals, and the answer is: 'Because the animals are like us.' Ask the experimenters why it is morally OK to experiment on animals, and the answer is: 'Because the animals are not like us.' Animal experimentation rests on a logical contradiction." -Professor Charles R. Magel.........."Those who won't hesitate to vivisect, won't hesitate to lie about it as well." GB Shaw ......................"I would not want to promote research on animals. Fortunately, only my back is twisted, not my mind." Linn Pulis (Polio victim) ......................."The reason why I am against animal research is because it doesn't work. It has no scientific value. One cannot extrapolate the results of animal research to human beings, and every good scientist knows that." Robert Mendelsohn, M.D., (Late Professor of Pediatrics at the U. of Illinois, College of Medicine) ......................"It is difficult to entertain a warm feeling for a 'medical man' who straps dogs to a table, cuts their vocal cords, and spends an interesting day or week slowly vivisecting or dismembering them." Clare Booth Luce (American writer of "The Women" and former ambassador to Italy; 1902-1987) ................"My own conviction is that the study of human physiology by way of experiments on animals is the most grotesque and fantastic error ever committed in the whole range of human intellectual activity." Dr. GF Walker in "Medical World" Dec 8, 1933) ....................."Atrocities are no less atrocities when they occur in laboratories and are called 'medical research'." George Bernard Shaw .............."The question was, can we give up animal experiments without halting medical progress? My answer is not only can one [give up vivisection] but that one must give up animal experiments not to halt medical progress. Today's rebellion against vivisection is no longer based on animal welfare. We have to speak of a scientific rebellion.out of consideration for human beings." Pietro Croce, MD (College of American Pathologists) ..........."There will come a time when the world will look back to modern vivisection in the name of Science, as they do now to burning people at the stake in the name of religion." Henry J. Bigelow, MD .............."I am not interested to know whether vivisection produces results that are profitable to the human race. The pain which it inflicts upon unconsenting animals is the basis of my enmity toward it, and it is to me sufficient justification of the enmity without looking further." Mark Twain (1835-1910) .............."What I think about vivisection is that if people admit that they have the right to take or endanger the life of living beings for the benefit of many, there will be no limit for their cruelty." Leo Tolstoy............."I abhor vivisection. It should at least be curbed. Better, it should be abolished. The whole thing is evil. Charles Mayo, MD (Founder of Mayo Clinic; 1865-1939) .............."It seems to me of great importance to teach children respect for life. Towards this end, experiments on living animals in classrooms should be stopped. To encourage cruelty in the name of science can only destroy the finer emotions of affection and sympathy, and breed an unfeeling callousness in the young towards suffering in all living creatures." Eleanor Roosevelt (Writer, diplomat, First Lady; 1884-1962)

BAR would like to encourage every person who has ever loved a companion animal to
make the connection and extend this compassion and protection to all non human animals worldwide, not just the ones we might find "cute".

A group we receive updates from is UPC. United Poultry Concerns is a nonprofit organization that promotes the compassionate and respectful treatment of domestic fowl.

United Poultry Concern

This is the reality of battery hen egg production. Please help. Don't buy cruelty. Any commerical egg production involves killing male chicks because they do not produce eggs. They are often killed in extremely inhumane ways.

Current methods of chicken slaughter are far from "Humane"

BAR believes peace can only be achieved in this world if one tries to develop in their own life, a cruelty-free conscious compassionate life to both our human and non human animals. We would encourage people to join as many international animal rights groups as possible and become active. Non human animal exploitation and cruelty has no borders and the more voices that are heard, the more government and industries will sit up and listen. One of the best way to help stop animal cruelty, exloitation and abuse is to stop supporting industries and governments who support this directly or indirectly. Another way is to adopt a:

Cruelty free lifestyle.
Purchasing cruelty free products, footware, clothing etc.
Australian List of cruelty free products.

Another important way is to help stop cruelty is to
become an activist !

Buddhists for Animal Rights believes in protection and rights for the vulnerable, those who have no voice.
We believe through each small compassionate action, this will extend to all and help achieve peace in this world ultimately.

Humane education is the key also to stopping animal abuse. BAR also recommends supporting your local animal shelters by adopting homeless animals and supporting Farm sanctuaries.
We would also recommend you urge your members of Government and local districts to adopt "In Defense of Animals" - Animal Guardian Campaign.

Each year millinos of Korean Dogs are strung up by the back legs, and beaten to death over a long period of time to increase the adrenaline in their meat. Adrenalin is seen to be an aphrodisiac. Also dogs don't sweat, and eating dog meat is believed to keep the person cooler in the hot months
